Sugar Britches

Sugar Britches is a blend of mischievous high-brow honky-tonk with eclectic instrumental accompaniment and clever lyrics, written by Brian Johanson and performed by a cavalcade of characters. Combining good ‘ol country heartache along with snarky folksy wit, Sugar Britches has been winning over audiences across Colorado and in southern Wyoming since 2017.

Highlights for the band include opening slots for Wynonna Judd, The Reverend Horton Heat, Hymn for Her, Pokey LaFarge, Corb Lund, Midland, Hannah Dasher and Reckless Kelly, Jalan Crossland and Jason Eady, as well as CSU’s Moby Arena, the Gold Hill, CO 4th of July Twangfest, and recognition on The Colorado Sound’s Top 20 List of Colorado Artists for 2021.

The band has played the 2019 Denver Westword Music Showcase, municipal concert series, music festivals, a slew of brewery shows (New Belgium, Odell, Gruner Brothers (Casper), 105 West (Castle Rock), Wild Cider (Firestone), Lander Bar (Wyoming), etc.) and additional club, theater and private events.

They won Best Country Band of 2019 from the Fort Collins Musicians Association, and were nominated for Best Country Band in 2019 by the Denver Westword.

In 2019, the band released their first album, Don’t Make Her a Mixtape Yet You Idiot, and in 2022, their second album, No One Cares That It’s Your Birthday. They are working on new songs and artistic endeavors all the time.

Sugar Britches performs as a full band, trio, or duo, in acoustic and electric configurations.

“Any band trafficking in country or Americana must ask itself: “Should I go full shitkicker or just half shitkicker?” Colorado band Sugar Britches chose the former, and we thank them for it.”
-Westword, October 26, 2022

“Not only do they deliver witty lyricism, they provide guitar work that has a punch behind it. Both those features combine to make a band that will keep their hits running through your ears for days.”
-Taste Music, January 12, 2020

“Northern Colorado’s answer to the Old 97’s.”
-Scene Magazine, March 6, 2019

“They play it with the same swagger as Merle Haggard or Junior Brown would have — twangy and tight with a bounce.”
