Melissa Ivey

melissa Ivey

(Denver, CO) At the age of 9 Melissa Ivey was already building her first home studio.  Armed with a parade of Casio key boards, random garage sale instruments, a newly stringed half sized violin, and trusty Sony tape recorder her journey began. Years later a variety of guitars and a 5 string bass would enter her world changing the experimental noise maker into a song writer and singer. Being grounded for most of her early teen-age years, she practiced solo for hours on end. Once she was released back into the “wild” she gathered a group of rowdy punk rockers to start up a band best described as a No Doubt meets Rancid.  In their 5 years together they toured the west coast, recorded three EP's, and opening up for legendary punk bands such as 999, Agent Orange, and local San Jose favorites like Groovie Ghoulies and. All this before any of the band mates could even buy lotto tickets and cigarettes let alone beer at the venues they were packing and selling out.

When the band "died", as she puts it, in her early 20's she migrated back to her birth city Denver, Colorado armed with one acoustic guitar and many tales to tell. Here she has produced 4 solo albums. They range from one room one microphone acoustic tales straight from her note book, to her latest release Lovers & Stars.  This is a polished 5 song EP made with pop Producer and co-writer of the title track Christopher Jack. These two immediately hit it off and were making the right moves with Melissa's band the Gentlemen and Daren Han (The EeLS, Bare Naked Ladies, Ani Difranco,) on drums. Dave Herrera of the Westword (Colorado's leading alternative weekly publication) said "This delicious pop ditty hits a sweet spot with me like no recording since the Fray's early demos. It's a quantum leap beyond anything she's produced before - a track that evokes Mary Lou Lord as much as it does Sheryl Crow”.  Melissa Ivey was named Best Singer/Songwriter in 2005 and 2006 by Westword.

At the end of 2006 she landed a lead role in a cartoon series in Spain. While in Madrid, studying her Spanish for the project, she performed and collaborated with local talent.  This brought a more worldly sound to her music as she was introduced to new instruments and melodies.   In 2007, she accomplished one of her goals, and licensed 3 of the 5 songs on her EP.

She has taken the past few years off to travel.  Busking down the coast of California, attending peace rally's in Washington DC, and making an honest woman of her 7 year partner.  Melissa is now busier than ever making scores for films and videos, doing voice over work for television and radio, and tracking new material.  Melissa is currently working with her former band mates (The Gentlemen) on a house band album with Comedian Josh Blue.

This barely 5 foot tall gypsy rocker writes fearlessly, plays stringed without prejudice, all the while charming audiences young and old.  She is a joy to watch live and just as amazing to hear floating out of your speakers or headphones. Her next stop...your favorite playlist.
